React SVG Icons vs Icon Fonts
Icon fonts were once a common way to ship UI symbols. React applications now often prefer SVG components because the shape, semantics, and styling remain explicit in the markup.
SVG keeps the graphic explicit
SVG paths scale cleanly, can inherit currentColor, and can expose meaningful labels or hidden presentation semantics. Components also make size and attributes visible at the call site.
Fonts have different failure modes
Icon fonts depend on font loading, glyph mapping, and font rendering. Missing fonts can produce blank or incorrect symbols, and aligning a glyph with text can require font-specific CSS adjustments.
Why React teams often choose SVG
SVG components fit bundler imports, component tests, accessible labels, dark mode, and style variables. Icon fonts can still suit legacy systems, but new React systems usually benefit from explicit SVG assets.
